Profile

The name of the company is Uhuru Outfitters. “Uhuru” is the Swahili word for “freedom.” In the construction world, freedom is only truly possible when you are comfortable with the people you work with and believe in the quality of their craftsmanship.

Tiffany Cross’ first encounter with the Swahili language took place when she did volunteer work in Tanzania, East Africa. There she learned the language in counseling and mentoring. She also worked on construction of educational centers, using techniques that were new to her (due to the lack of power tools or OSHA regulations). She was impressed with the cooperation and cohesion among those who work interdependently. She maintains this view in those whom she carefully hires so that they can seamlessly join crews, having a common goal. This results in a mutually beneficial worksite experience.

Following Hurricane Katrina, Tiffany spent time in Louisiana and Alabama doing relief work on damaged homes and community centers. Her love for volunteer construction projects has taken her all around the country and all around the world. Every project she’s worked on and every group of people she’s worked with has served to round out her approach to managing people and materials on construction sites.

Ms. Cross and the Uhuru Outfitters crew always enjoy projects where quality of workmanship is the priority. She is readily available for contact or consultation and ensures her clients will have a project completed to their satisfaction. This is of great personal priority to her.
